And now for something completely different…
I’m crazy excited to announce that my first non-mandala coloring book is now officially launched! Allow me to show you a sample of what you can find in my book Adult Coloring Book Vintage Series: The Masters of Fashion Illustration!!
I have been working on this book since LAST NOVEMBER, and I am BEYOND proud of it. All of the art is based on fashion magazine covers from the 1910’s and early 1920’s, and felt almost like a time travel collaboration between myself and my most admired illustrators of all time:
The Masters of Fashion Illustration recreates some of the most iconic fashion magazine cover illustrations as a gorgeous new coloring book for adults. The book features 5 of the most prolific fashion artists of the art deco and art nouveau periods: Helen Dryden, Erté, George Wolfe Plank, Frank Leyendecker, and George Barbier. These artists appeared on the covers of the most popular fashion magazines of all time; magazines still being published today. Take a trip to the golden age of fashion illustration, before photography permanently took its place. Hand-drawn and lovingly reproduced by best-selling coloring book artist Wendy Piersall, these 30 highly detailed illustrations are true to the original works while being adapted specifically to be an absolute joy to color.
This is also my first non-mandala coloring book, something I’ve wanted to do for quite a while but have been so busy drawing mandalas that I simply haven’t had the bandwidth to pull it off. And I must admit, drawing mandalas was SO much easier than drawing for this book. It really pushed me to the limits of what I thought I was capable of doing as an illustrator. And it took soooooo much longer than I thought it would to complete!!
And here’s where I give a huge, thankful shout-out to the talented Aimee Rathje who colored the back cover of the book for me. I have LONG admired her wondrous ability to color human figures so extraordinarily well, she’s crazy talented. This drawing is based on work by George Barbier:
And another sample from the book colored by Aimee, this one based on a magazine cover illustrated by George Wolfe Plank:
